Hey everyone. I want to start this column off by responding to Shane Mullaney, who responded to my column about the workers I believed would take professional wrestling into the future. Just because I was pointing out similarities between that group and guys like Pillman, Hogan etc. Every wrestler has similarities between another. Ric Flair was similar to Buddy Rogers. Hogan was similar to ‘Superstar’ Bill Graham. Demolition was similar to the Road Warriors. There is a reason for why guys like Harry Smith are not on WWE TV yet. The WWE is waiting to find an original gimmick for him. They want to avoid exactly what you pointed out.
You say this group is only getting ahead because of family ancestry? What do you call wrestling in Japan, Mexico and Canada? Its called perfecting their skills the hard way.
Moving on to Ken Kennedy and Batista. It’s quite simple. We have seen Kennedy vs. Undertaker 3 times already, we have yet to see Batista vs. Undertaker. There is more anticipation surrounding a match between Batista and Undertaker rather than Kennedy and Undertaker. You question Batista’s age? That is a fair enough argument against Batista. However, he hasn’t been wrestling for as long as the usual 40 year old. His body hasn’t gone through the bumps that the usual 40 year old has. Therefore his body should be able to last longer. As far as Kennedy goes. Remember back to a young, cocky John Cena. He was over and had great feuds with Kurt Angle and Undertaker. The WWE through the belt on him, turned him face and he became a watered down self of his former self. His career went down hill (even though there are less boos when Cena comes out in recent times). I would rather sit through 5 years of Batista and wait for Kennedy to mature as a young wrestler, then see Kennedy thrust into the spotlight.
Finally…another ignorant Cena hater. History shows the most over guy (measured by crowd reaction, attendance, attention and merchandise revenue), is the main event. Why? His name goes on the marquee. Bruno, Hogan, Flair, Graham. If they were not over they would not have gotten the main event spot. Its quiet simple.
P.S. Work on your grammar and spelling please ?
Now that the house keeping is out of the way, its time for the bulk of Epicenter of Wrestling Gospel, the Australia View with yours truly, the columnist you all want to be, Shane Mead.
Something has been bugging me lately when it comes to wrestling. That is the current direction of TNA. It was once a great wrestling organisation that was backed by most wrestling fans that new about it as the next big wrestling company to challenge Vince McMahon. However something happened, to this potentially great wrestling company. It wasn’t the workers, it wasn’t injuries and it certainly isn’t their fan base. The booking team of TNA is slowly destroying what made TNA famous. The booking for TNA Impact has been terrible. I touched on this about a month ago, when I wrote about VKM, but things have slowly gotten worse.
One of the mistakes TNA is doin Is introducing the women’s division. TNA at the present time is having trouble utilising what they have into a one hour a week television show. What makes them think they can effectively introduce an entirely new division into their already packed schedule? Women’s wrestling when booked properly, is a great addition to any brand, but TNA will just crumble if they try and introduce this new division at this time. In wrestling, time management is very important and to try and squeeze this new division into a schedule that features 4 hours of television a month and one 2 two hour PPV its just a horrible mistake to say the least.
In addition, the last edition of Impact featured more terrible booking decisions. Its obvious by the addition of a short video package that TNA is going to continue with the Sting/Abyss feud. So Sting gets the win over Abyss in the Prison Yard match on PPV. That is fair enough, so the next logical step to continue this program is for Abyss to get some momentum and show some dominance to maintain some credibility. Logic says, Abyss eliminates Sting from the gauntlet match and ends up in at leats the final four, with maybe Sting coming back in to eliminate Abyss. The direction TNA goes in is this. They have Bobby Roode eliminate Sting first up and Abyss is the 7th man to be eliminated. So, Abyss doesn’t get back at Sting and goes out very quickly resulting in even less credibility as a monster. Instead TNA has Tyson Tomko eliminate 4 workers (A.J Styles, Rhino, Eric young and Scott Steiner) and finish in the final two of the match. Remember this is Christians lackey, his bodyguard, if you will.
This is all ‘Wrestling Booking 101’, ‘Wrestling Booking for Dummies’. It is all basic logic, which the TNA booking team cannot understand. When I spoke about VKM I placed the entire blame on Vince Russo. Its beyond that now and is unfair. As much as I hate Vince Russo, it’s the entire booking team that can shoulder the blame. For TNA to become successful, its time that group of bookers either step up or stepped out. It’s also time for the IWC to stop drinking the ‘Anti-WWE’ kool-aid and let TNA know that this is ridiculous. I am angry for the same reason I get angry with the WWE. That is because I know they can do so much better. TNA needs to show guys like Jericho, Hogan and Big Show that they’re worth their time and energy. More importantly though, its time they stepped up and showed Spike TV they are worth their time.
This is Shane Mead and if you don’t like it…it must be true.
P.S. I want to send my condolences to the family of WWE, WCW and ECW worker Mike Awesome. That two great worker gone in a short period of time. It really makes me as a wrestling want to sit back and appreciate all of these great past, present and future wrestlers, because in this business the mortality rate is very low.
RIP Mike Awesome
