Dru Onyx Interview

Today We Interview Dru Onyx.

Interview Conducted By E L Farrell

Thursday, February 1, 2007

My first question is how did you get into the wrestling business?

Been a fan a long time, so in 1998 I searched on line for a wrestling school in my area and found a school ran by Northern Championship Wrestling. And I joined in the beginning of 1999.

Who was your favorite wrestler growing up and why?

Rick Flair, he was the epitome of a wrestling champion, amazing work rate, conducted himself in a professional matter outside the ring while he did whatever he had to win inside. He put importance to what ever title he was holding thus elevating both the title and himself. He knew how to incorporate the fans into match to help enhance the story, and knew how to portray both arrogance and confidence.

You were trained by Marc Pilon? What was it like to be trained by him?

It was a good educational start in professional wrestling, he was patient teacher who always taught us in a safe environment and made sure we understood the basic fundamentals of the sport. His ring psychology made sense and he taught me the importance of timing.

Who was your first ever opponent?

A wrestler named Cobra, he won using brass knuckles which didn’t bother me in fact I think it was acknowledgement to a promising rookie’s career that he had to use them.

Who are your favorite opponents to wrestle?

Fergal Devitt who is now Prince Devitt in New Japan Pro Wrestling, all our matches was real tests of combat, very brutal. We have feuded all over U.K., Ireland, Wales, and the U.S. He is the only man to have beaten me twice for the NWA British Commonwealth Heavyweight title.

What was your best match in your opinion?

International Wrestling Syndicate “Unf’n Sanctioned” September 2004 in Montreal Quebec Canada against Sexy Eddy. It’s IWS biggest show of the year, and they wanted us former heavyweight champions to set the mood for the show by putting us first. I was just on that night, character, wrestling, and aggressiveness everything was on point, plus it’s next to impossible to have bad match with Eddy. Though I lost the match I was happy with my performance. I have a problem watching old matches due to the fact I’m overly critical of my performance, but I can watch that one.

What's the worst you've been hurt in the ring?

My worst injuries sustained were pulled Achilles in both ankles.

You appeared For NWA in the Republic of Ireland and United Kingdom. Tell us about your time there?

It was a good experience my first international tour was for Andre Baker’s NWA U.K. Hammerlock and I wrestled two tours for him and wrestled for Celtic Wrestling this year in Wales. Learned early with Hammerlock how to take care of my body and deal with the rigors of traveling. Two week tours main eventing wrestling more then 20 minutes a night with only 4 days off. Andre is a stand up guy with a wealth of knowledge in shoot wrestling, plus I always get to see my relatives when I’m there so that’s a bonus.

NWA Ireland was equally good experience, the wrestling was excellent. The scenery in Ireland is beautiful & the people gracious. One of the best training facilities for pro wrestling had been there on three tours and always a pleasure to perform.

You wrestled For the International Wrestling Syndicate which back then it was known as the Internet Wrestling Syndicate. What was it like to work there?

It was the place to be at the time, a lot of energy, great crowds and guys in the locker room sacrificing their bodies to give the fans organized carnage, & structured violence. I was able to refine the Dru Onyx character in their promotion.

What Other Promotions have you worked for?

I have worked for Total Non Stop Action (house show), NWA Quebec, NWA Pro Wrestling, NWA ECCW, NWA Top Rope, NWA Main Event, NWA Green Mountain; Liberty State Wrestling is just a few.

What titles have you held in your career?

All Canadian Wrestling Heavyweight Championship

International Wrestling Syndicate Heavyweight Championship

International Wrestling Syndicate Tag Team Championship w/Green Phantom (current)

2 times Championship Wrestling Association Heavyweight Championship

2 times NWA Quebec Heavyweight Wrestling Championship

2 times NWA British Commonwealth Heavyweight Championship

1 NWA U.K. Hammerlock Heavyweight Championship

NWA North American Heavyweight Wrestling Championship (current)

Which title meant the most to you?

NWA British Commonwealth, I have defended or promoted that title in Canada, U.S. Wales, U.K. Barbados, Italy, France, It was the most traveled title in the NWA after the World title. I believe that I have added prestige and recognition to that title, holding that championship has taught me how to become a traveling champion. Without sounding pompous or conceited, I believe I have created a standard in which one is to hold the title. I may not be the greatest wrestler to hold that title, but I am definitely its greatest champion.

What promotions would you like to work for?

Don’t have any particulars, anywhere that can guarantee me finical stability and a possible career.

What is your most memorable professional moment?

My most memorable professional moment would have to be once holding 3 NWA Titles at the same time, British Commonwealth, U.K. & THE Quebec titles.

Where do you see yourself in ten years from now?

I’ll be probably retired, running my pro wrestling school www.nwatorturechamber.com on a full time basis. At that time raising a family might be a reality, while donated my time to charities.

Do you have any Hobbies or interests outside wrestling?

Several, I’m an avid comic collector; I play chess, and dabble with music from time to time. Also I’m a sport history buff.

Any last comments you would like to make?

Yes to all the fans who come out to support your favorite villains & heroes, to all the guys who set up the rings, the time keepers, officials, and the gophers who help out the promotions, the internet scribes who help maintain the magic we create, I salute you all the unsung heroes.
