Fergal Devitt Interview

Well for the benefit of fans who don't follow the indy scene, can you give them a good idea of who Jason Jones is?

Jason Jones WAS an average guy who was chasing a wild goose (the dream of professional wrestling). I realized that this business is about making yourself stand out, making someone realize that there is something unique about you. I had to find what that special something was for me and it was the fact that when I get in the ring to wrestle, I give 150% of my effort to give the fans satisfaction. To give the fans something to talk about when they go home. I have been on a LOT of wrestling shows and I have also seen some very bad matches. I strive also to carry myself with some dignity, class, morals that I know not every wrestler carries him or herself with. I also want to think me the following way: I do not want to be Rocky Balboa. EVERY wrestler now-a-days wants to be the fighting underdog that proves everyone wrong. I want to be that guy who is always making a name for himself by beating Rocky Balboa up. Kicking him when he's down. That is what makes me different, amongst other things.

How about giving the fans your statistics?

I am 23 years old, born on June 16th. I weigh about 220 lbs and am 6'1".

What made you decide to get into the wrestling business and how did you go about getting into it?

What made me want to be a wrestler? The fact that I HAD to. It's something that I had a calling for very early in my life and just could not shake the feeling. I remember the very first wrestling match I ever saw and it was Brian Pillman vs. Jushin Liger at the very first monday Nitro and just could not live it down. As for me getting into this great business, I was in the 8th grade at J.N. Fries Middle school. I had class with a buddy of mine, George South Jr. We instantly became friends because of wrestling. I knew his dad was a wrestler, but never really asked to go meet him just because of me being nervous. We stayed very good friends throughout middle school, high school and into my first year of college. George Jr. had called me one night explaining to me that his dad had opened a new training school just a few minutes down the highway and wanted to know if I was interested. He knew good and well what the answer was. From there, I met George South Sr. (a truly good person) and trained everyday for a month for 3 hours a day. The training school was a small SMALL building. barely big enough to set a ring in there. The ceiling was just a few inches away from my head when I was in the ring (and keep in mind that the ring post had to be cut down to fit the ring in there). I remember the first day of training like it was yesterday, he explained to me how to take a bump, and then the following 3 hours was me doing NOTHING but bumps and this was the way that my trainer was trained (along with some of the older wrestlers also, from what they had told me). The next day, my neck was so stiff I could barely move it. Keep in mind that I also attended college full-time, coached my high-school swim team, had 2 part time jobs, and wanted to exercise as much as possible and so my days were packed.

Who were your favourite wrestlers growing up?

My favorite wrestlers included Brian Pillman. Rey Mysterio, Ricky Morton, Masked Superstar, Brad Armstrong (actually the entire Armstrong family), Legion of Doom, Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Too Cold Scorpio just to name a few of the MANY.

Who was your first match against?

My first match was against a guy that had helped me train. His name is Chris Nelson. Unfortunately, my first match was also a loss. It was on May 23rd, 2003. I didn't tell my parents at first what I was doing (training to be a pro-wrestler). I had simply told them to be at the training school for a wrestling show that friday night. From there, they saw that I was a wrestler and they had supported me from then on out.

Describe your Wrestling Gimmick?

Well, like I said earlier. I am not Rocky Balboa. I'm that guy who kicks him when he is down. But, I do it with class and style. I am sort of a hunter hearse helmsley, blue-blood steven regal and bobby eaton, and ric flair all rolled into one if that makes any sense.

Describe a typical day of training for you. What do you focus on the most?

Well, let me first go on to say that everyday is training for me. I do not have any off days or rest days. I try to pick up on something new everyday. I want to learn at least one thing new everday so I feel that my day has not been a waste.

What holds and moves are you best known for?

I am known for a variety of moves. Recently, I have been incorporating Dean Malenko's Texas Cloverleaf as my finisher. I do not see it done anymore. I wanted to bring something from the past back and make it work.

What was your best match in your opinion?

My best match? I have had a lot of REALLY good matches. But I would have to say that I can only narrow my "best match" award to two different people. My match for the CWA Heavyweight Championship against George South Jr a couple years ago and also pretty much any match against Brad Thomas.

What's the worst you've been hurt in the ring?

One of the first matches I had, I attempted a move that I was turning the wrong way for, and the next thing I know, POW, my eye socket hit his knee. That's not the worst of them though, I have had a number of concussions. Now I suffer from spontaneous headaches and dizzy spells.

What promotions have you worked for so far in your career?

A number of them, Exodus Wrestling Alliance, Carolina Wrestling Association, High Velocity Wrestling, Deep South Wrestling (Under WWE's name), and WWE. To name a few.

What promotions would you like to work for?

Ultimately, I would like to work in Japan and Mexico. Wrestling there, as we all know, is more respected and treated the way it should be. I also am working towards getting a full-time contract for WWE right now. That is my next goal.

What titles have you won so far in your career?

I have won the CWA Heavyweight title, North American Title, Tag Title. The EWA Heavyweight Title, Jr. Heavyweight Title, Tag Title. The ACW Heavyweight Title. At one point, I held the EWA, ACW, and the CWA heavyweight championships all at once.

You wrestled some WWE Dark Matches, One of which was against Chavo Guerrero. What was your experance like wrestling in WWE?

I felt that I was at home. I was there backstage with the superstars of today. I had a blast and envision myself doing that full-time.

What is your proudest moment in wrestling?

My proudest moment in wrestling was the night I wrestled Chavo Guerrero. It was my very first time wrestling for WWE, in my home-town, in a brand-new arena. My family was there rooting me on and some of my friends. I even had a "Jason" chant going on during that match. I know it wasn't suppose to happen, but it was one of those things that just did, and it was awesome.

Another one was when I was able to train "full-time" with Deep South Wrestling while it was under WWE ruling. I do not have a whole lot of friends in this industry, but I did make some down there. Most notably, Krissy Vaine helped me out a LOT down there. More so than any other person should. We were friends way before she was signed. When DSW and WWE split, I didn't have enough money to move to Tampa to continue to train there. She kept in contact with me and made every attempt to help me get down there. I also made pretty good friends with her boyfriend Ryan O'Reilly. He's one heck of a guy too. They are 2 good people. I will say this. They are my friends and I know that their names have come up in recent wrestling news. A LOT of people are saying that they are stupid and that they are throwing away the chance of a lifetime. However, I completely support their decision. They realized their priorities in their life and I give them nothing but praise for that. I will always consider them my friends. I know that they recently did their first interview since being released and they set a lot of facts straight. I am just sayin this to the people who didn't read their interview.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

I see myself wrestling, of course. With who? I don't know. But hopefully I will be able to support my family off of it and living comfortably (not necessarily in a giant mansion or driving 3 or 4 cars).
