Today we interview Christian Wrestling Alliance (CWA) Manager of The Year Mr Joey Nuggs. We Would like to thank Mr Nuggs for this interview.
Interview Conducted by E L Farrell
Q1: Joey. To start, how about giving the fans your statistics?
Im 6ft and 275 and it's all brains.
Q2: How did you get involved in the wrestling business?
I was producing a underground Hip Hop television and saw a flyer for indy event and thought that might be interesting to do a story on pro wrestling. So I called the phone number on the flyer and got a press pass to video whatever I wanted. After the event I thanked the wrestlers for their time and the great footage. "The Natural"Chris Chance asked me if I thought of getting into the business.I laughed and said yeah right me i'm not the type. He told me you would be a natural(no joke intended)as a manager. He gave me his phone number and told me to think about it.
Q3: What influenced your decision to become a wrestling manager?
I got up with Chris Chance and he agreed to let me come to some of his events for more footage for the show.I noticed that most wrestlers couldn't cut a descent promo to save their lives. I was already doing a comedy Character on my TV show named Tony Deluka. He was a recording artist manager as guy you wouldn't trust around your family let alone your music career.I would interview the rappers and thy would laugh so hard they couldn't finish the interviews. So one night I was joking around with some on the wrestlers in the parking lot and went into the comedy character. Chris Chance yelled thats it that's your gimmick you do that a wrestling event and you'll bring down the house. So I went home and started to build on my gimmick. I told myself I wanted the character to be someone I wouldn't get bored with doing over time and someone who I could grow with over time. Well me being Italian with a northern accent living in the south was a great foundation to build on. I have always been into gangsters and gangster movies. I always noticed they all had aliases. So Joey Nuggs became my alias. It's Joey Nuggs AKA Joey Nuggets AKA Joey Bag-a-donuts AKA Joey A boot to the back of your neck.
Q4: What other sports or hobbies do you have an interest in?
I love football i'm a die-hard Steelers fan.(Since Terry Bradshaw still had his hair)
Q5: Who are your Mentors?
Jim Cornett,Lou Albano,Freddie Blassie,JJ Dillion,Paul Ellering,Paul Heyman,Oliver Humperdink,and Gary Hart.
Q6: Tell us about your Wrestling Stable "Joey Nuggs Family Management"?
No it's Joey Nuggs of Nuggs Family Management Inc. I manage the following clients Hollow wicked(CWA #1 Contender for the heavy weight title) From the beautiful country of China The Red Dragon and the Families enforcer Tim"THe machine"Thomas.
Q7: You were named CWA Manager of the Year? What did that mean to you?
It is a great honor to get The Manager of the year award. I have seen managers come and go.I'm still here. They also have me doing color commentary for DVDs and TeleVison in the Orangeburg and Columbia,South Carolina market with "The offical voice of The CWA Jason Willis".If i'm not ringside with one of my clients. I'm insulting your favorite wrestler. I have been told i'm better than anyone one in WWE and TNA. But I try to stay humble. It's just a matter of time until I hit the majors.
Q8: Where and What Promotions have you worked for so far?
CWa in Orangeburg,SC, AIWF in The Winston Salem, NC Area Crew in the Raleigh,NC Area plus a few others I can't remember the names.
Q9: Would you ever consider getting into the ring?
Yes I would and have in CWA with The Red Dragon VS Team Y2X(we had the tag team belts and one of my champions was missing and they said you don't defend the titles you lose them).
Q10: What do you think of the WWE, TNA and the New ECW?
WWE is still the top dog in professional wrestling. Vince is a great business man. But he has disrespected the sport of wrestling to many times to count. TNA has great potential. But it still seem like a independant promotion that just got lucky and got a Tv deal after WWE left and went to USA Network. I don't like the goofy shaped ring either. We aren't in Japan guys. This is American pro wrestling wake up clowns! New ECW I would love to work for The New ECW. I think Paul is a brillant man. I hope it doesn't become too plastic and corporate.
Q11: Who do you think is the best wrestler in the CWA?
This is a trick question. I want to say all of my wrestlers. But I honestly would say Timber just because of his years of experience and he has wrestled so many big names up and down the east coast. Plus a wrestler that size shouldn't be able to do the high flying he does. He does the moonsault you wouldn't believe happened unless you saw it. He jumped off a 20 plus foot extention ladder through a table in the hardcore match against The Barbarian it was incredible.
Q12: What do you think of CWA Wrestler Johnny Flex? Do you think it was great for him to turn heel?
Flex is always fun to watch. He might not be the most athletic but he has charisma. I think it was great to watch him turn heel. On June 3rd he hit the owner of The CWA Rodger Gleaton in the head with a camera. I think it was stupid because he Gleaton has a arsonal wrestlers at his disposal to help do his dirty work. I'm looking forward to seeing how this all ends.
Q13: What sort of reaction do you get from people when they learn you are a wrestling manager?
They don't believe me at first. Then they ask the old question is it real? I tell them it pays a real check. So it must be real.
Q14: What is your most memorable professional moment?
Talking ring psychology with Playboy Gary Hart in The AIWF. What a class act. He told me if it was the 80s I would in the majors now. He said he liked my work and to keep doing what your doing someone will notice. So that me I must be doing something right.
Q15: Any last comments you'd like to make?
