Wrestling Interview With Indy Wrestler Kayla Sparks
First off Kayla, thanks for doing this interview! When did you realize you wanted to be involved in professional wrestling?
Hi! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do this interview with you! =) I started watching wrestling when I was practically still in diapers! I absolutely loved watching it growing up and honestly ever since then, I KNEW I had to be apart of it someday.
Who were your favorite male wrestlers growing up?
My all-time favorite wrestler growing up and still is to this day, The Undertaker! I absolutely LOVE his gimmick and admire him so much for what he has accomplished in his wrestling career and contributed to the wrestling business, personally and professionally. But I could go on and on for days, Hulk Hogan, Sting, "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels, Matt and Jeff Hardy, Bret "The Hitman" Hart - just to name a few.
Who were your favorite women wrestlers growing up?
I really admired Chyna before she went into Playboy. I thought she was sending out a really great message to fans, females especially, that women could be capable of ANYTHING in a male-dominated sport! I thought she brought a lot to the table and inspired myself and many future female wrestlers to come. I really enjoyed watching Molly Holly too. I thought she had all the right tools to be a successful female wrestler - the brains, the athletic ability and the beauty.
Describe your Wrestling Gimmick?
Win or lose, the most important thing for me is to go out there and give everything that I can to the fans and have fun no matter what I'm doing. And if that means kicking butt, so be it! Just think... Girl Power! ;)
What promotions have you worked for so far in your career?
I started out training and wrestling for a school known as 24/7 Wrestling (now defunct.) Almost two years later, I began working for a promotion called World of Hurt Wrestling and wrestled on a lot of their shows. Ever since then, it's been (literally) a roller-coaster ride full of wrestling shows! I'll list them and tell you what state/country they're based out of: 2CW, based out of New York, AWA-NJ, based out of New Jersey, CCW, based out of Connecticut, DWI, based out of New Jersey, EWA, based out of New York, G.L.O.R.Y. Wrestling, a female wrestling website that held their second convention/show in 2004 based out of New Jersey, GWF, based out of New Jersey, Indy Gurlz, based out of New Jersey, JWA-United, based out of New Jersey, MFW (now defunct), based out of New York, NECW, based out of Massachusetts, NEPW (now defunct), based out of New York, NWA: Green Mountain (now defunct), based out of Vermont, PWA, based out of Ontario, Canada, PWF-NJ, based out of New Jersey, RCW (now defunct), based out of Connecticut, URW, based out of Massachusetts, W3 (now defunct), based out of New York, WFA, based out of Vermont, and last but not least WWW, based out of Massachusetts.
What promotions would you like to work for?
If I was given the opportunity, I would wrestle anywhere in the world! It doesn't matter where I am wrestling, as long as I am doing what I love to do and trying to get my name out there in a positive way.
What titles have you held so far in your career?
I had the honor and privilege of holding the WOHW Women's Title not just once, but twice! It was a great achievement for myself and my wrestling career. I'm very grateful that experience happened and to be recognized for my hard work.
Who are your favorite opponents to wrestle?
I've had some great matches with Alexa, Thatcher, Cindy Rogers, Alicia, Missy Sampson, Melissa Stripes, and Miss DeVille.
What was your best match in your opinion?
It's hard for me to choose because I love them all. But some of my favorite matches to date so far include: Kayla Sparks vs. Melissa Stripes at Indy Gurlz; Kayla Sparks vs. Miss DeVille & Barbie at WOHW WrestleFest '05; The Diva Killaz vs. T&A at CCW.
What's the worst you've been hurt in the ring?
I was on the receiving end of a pretty bad concussion that left me out of the ring for three months. That wasn't fun! But hey, I got back up and kicked some more butt! (that rhymed! lol)
What is your proudest moment in wrestling?
Retaining the WOHW Women's Championship twice, plus winning an award for Best Female of 2005 ALL on the same night as my birthday AND being able to become Tony Mamaluke's tag-partner, even if it was for one night! ;)
What would be your dream match?
Good question! Any match against Molly Holly, Mickie James or Trish Stratus. Also I would love to do a TLC match someday!
Who are in your opinion the top Indy wrestlers out there today? Male and Female
Male - AJ Styles, Jay Lethal, Slyk Wagner Brown
Female - Mercedes Martinez, Daizee Haze, Shantelle Taylor
Do you have any Hobbies or interests outside wrestling?
When I'm not wrestling, I love listening to all types of music - Pop, Rock, R&B, Oldies, Dance, etc. My favorite band(s)/artist(s) to listen to are the Spice Girls, No Doubt, Madonna, Mariah Carey, and many more. I'm getting ready for college life soon and planning on to major in Multimedia. Hopefully I will like it. When it comes to animals, I have a HUGE heart for them! I own a dog named Viktor who I grew up with since he was a puppy. Love him to death! Hanging out with friends/family and being a goofball. I just recently purchased a Total Gym and plan on using it A LOT! Chuck Norris would be proud. ;)
What is Your Opinion on the WWE and TNA Promotions?
Well to be honest, I haven't really watched WWE or TNA as much as I would like to in the last year. But from the bits and pieces of what I've seen recently, it's starting to pick up again and then sometimes I wish I never turned on the TV. I can't really say anything negative though about either company because they all accomplished so much success and are still going, so mega props to both of them!
If you were offered a deal by either promotion, would you sign?
With no hesitations! It would be a dream come true but honestly, right now I don't feel like I am ready yet if it would to ever happen. I want to continue making a name for myself on the Indy scene more so now than ever! I've come to learn that you can never stop learning in this business, so I would really like to keep training and step it up to a whole new level!
Where do you hope to see yourself ten years from now?
Hopefully maintaining a healthy and happy wrestling career, and on to bigger and better things!
