MNM`s sudden split would lead to two careers going two very different paths.Johnny Nitro went on to win the Ecw world title while Joey Mercury would eventually end up been released from the Wwe. This article will look at the career of mercury, who gained a whole lot less from the split of Mnm. He began his career as Joey Matthews, wrestling in Maryland Championship Wrestling, where he held a variety of titles. He was also a member of Omega in North Carolina,which was run by the Hardy brothers. When he left Omega he formed a tag team with Christian York known as the ``Badstreet Boys``. They had nine tile reigns on the independent circuit before joining Ecw. They stayed there until the company folded in January 2001,appearing on the last pay per view, Guilty as Charged. They then went to Wcw,which suffered a similar fate to that of their extreme counterparts. They rejoined the independent circuit before York decided to retire in 2004,from then on Matthews competed in Roh and Tna before joining the developmental territory of the Wwe, Ohio Valley Wrestling.
Along with Nitro in Ovw, the pair captured the Ovw southern tag team championship before heading to Smackdown,where Matthews would become Mercury. They would add a spark to the dying tag team division,feudingwith the teams of Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio,Hardcore Holly and Charlie Haas and Paul London and Brian Kendrick. They managed to capture the WWE tag titles three times in their first year. In may 06,MNM would drop the straps to London and Kendrick as the team broke up and where then fired from Smackdown.Nitro and Melina would then appear on the following Raw without Mercury,who went into drug rehab(the real reason for the split).
Mercury stayed off WWE television for six months before returning to reform MNM to take on the Hardy Boys,in a match the latter team won. Nitro had held the Intercontinental title during his absence.Then in a four way tornado tag ladder match at Armageddon, Mercury would have his nose broke whilst slugging it out with the Hardy`s, London and Kendrick and the team of William Regal and Dave Taylor. After a brief return he was released in March 2007. He returned to Maryland Championship Wrestling where he won the heavyweight title from Adam Flash. Using the name of Joey Matthews he would later lose the gold to another WWE alum,Vito. In August 07 he signed on as an OVW trainer, while his former partner still has the Ecw world title wrapped around his waist.
